Alan Alda’s Parkinson’s Journey: Finding Joy in the Puzzle

Alan Alda

At Act4Parkinsons™, we believe that laughter and joy are powerful tools for coping with the challenges of Parkinson’s Disease and the struggles of everyday life. Few people embody that spirit better than actor and advocate Alan Alda.

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2015, Alda, best known for his role as Hawkeye Pierce in MASH*, continues to live life with humor, creativity, and resilience. In a recent interview, he described his daily experience with Parkinson’s as a “series of puzzles,” each one requiring a new solution. “Almost every day I’m finding a new way to do something,” he said. “It’s a little like a game. If I keep at it, I can eventually solve it, and then I feel like a million bucks.”

That mindset is exactly what we champion at Act4ParkinsonsTM. Parkinson’s is a progressive disease, and while it brings physical and emotional trials, it also invites us to discover new ways to adapt, connect, and thrive. Alda’s attitude of treating each challenge as a puzzle to be solved reminds us that joy can be found even in the smallest victories.

Despite facing full-body tremors and face blindness, Alda hasn’t stepped away from his passion. He recently made a cameo in Netflix’s The Four Seasons, a reimagining of his 1981 film, and praised Tina Fey’s adaptation with his signature warmth and optimism. His life is a powerful reminder that Parkinson’s doesn’t define a person; it’s just one part of a much larger journey. And through that journey, laughter and joy can be guiding lights.

At Act4ParkinsonsTM, we stand with Alan Alda and everyone living with Parkinson’s. Together, we celebrate the courage to keep going, the creativity to keep adapting, and the joy that makes each day worth living.
