Bas Bloem, neurologist and Professor of Neurological Movement Disorders, founded the Radboudumc Center of Expertise for Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders in 2002. The Center of Expertise strives to provide the best possible care for people with Parkinson’s Disease, or Parkinsonism, a rare hereditary movement disorder.
Bloem works closely with Marten Munneke. In 2004, they founded ParkinsonNet, a national network of more than 4,000 care providers (reference date 01-01-2024) who specialize in the treatment and guidance of people with Parkinson’s or Parkinsonism.
The origins of ParkinsonNet started with a dream. During an epidemiology course in 2000 on the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog, they talked about the complex disease, the challenges in many daily activities for people living with Parkinson’s disease, and the necessary, specialized care from many different disciplines and healthcare providers. Thus, the idea of ParkinsonNet, a network in which patients and healthcare providers work together to provide tailor-made care, was born.
